Yoga & Beauty Tips Saving Face - Avoiding Premature Aging
Overuse of soaps, perfumes, antiperspirants, and hot baths will further dry out your skin. Factors like excessive thinking, stress, tension, over work, strain, irregular sleeping/eating habits will also enhance the aging process. So while the summer is here and the sun is shining, enjoy yourself, meditate under a tree, drink lots of water, eat fresh fruits and veggies and protect your skin! Have a great summer! Natural Sunscreens The skin is the largest organ of the human body and acts as our receptor, therefore influencing the way we feel. Substances applied to skin are absorbed into the body and some of these harsh synthetic chemicals have side effects that assist in damaging the skin. These chemical toxins are readily absorbed through skin and build up in the body's fatty tissues creating further problems for the consumer. Sunscreens permit the absorption of small amounts of UV rays but filters them into benign infrared wavelengths. Chemical-free and natural sunscreens use titanium dioxide, zinc oxide and PABA. They are physical barrier-type sunscreens and generally less irritating. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide protect against UVA and UVB rays. PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid), a vitamin B derivative, is the only FDA-approved natural sunscreen agent. But, numerous studies have shown that many botanical-based ingredients are effective when applied topically before and after sun exposure. A few people experience allergic reactions to PABA, so be sure to test new products on a small patch of your skin. There are PABA-free lotions using benzophenone as an alternative sunscreen. As the name implies, sunblocks “block” the absorption of UV rays. The most beneficial and effective sunblock ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, mineral salts that scatter sunrays and reflect them away from vulnerable skin. Sesame oil resists 30 percent of UV rays, while coconut oil, peanut oil, olive oil, and cottonseed oil block out about 20 percent. Mineral oil, derived from petroleum doesn't resist any UV rays and dissolves the sebum secreted from oil glands that helps inhibit water evaporation from the skin. Cocoa butter can moisturize and soften your skin. As an ingredient in
sunscreens, it offers protection from drying sun and wind. Vitamin E fights
free radicals, helping to prevent skin damage from too much sun. *Certain medications, such as antibiotics and anti-depressants (including St. John’s Wort and Prozac) can increase photosensitivity.
