Yoga & Beauty Tips

Balance with Yoga
by Cathy Keenan

DianaIf you look up the word 'Beauty' in the dictionary you will find many interpretations. And that’s exactly what they are, interpretations. I found one that defined beauty as ‘having a sense of harmony’. To me, being in harmony with yourself is to feel grounded, poised, balanced and strong. Yoga is an ancient art based on a harmonizing system of development for the body, mind, and spirit. The continued practice of yoga will lead you to a sense of peace and well-being, and also a feeling of being at one with your environment.

Balance - a state of equilibrium [noun]

To be in balance with yourself, your environment, your thoughts, your goals, your values… that is beauty.

Balancing the Body

Practicing yoga balances the entire nervous system and also energizes and relaxes the body simultaneously. For the true benefits of yoga to take place, both sides of the brain need to be worked out. That is why a lot of the yoga poses concentrate on training and using both sides of the body.

Standing poses are really good for rebalancing as our bodies tend to rely on the stronger and more dominate side. Uneven bodies may eventually lead to chronic illnesses and injuries through over compensation of one side.

Warrior I I - Virabhadrasana II

Strengthens legs and arms; improves balance and concentration; builds confidence

Begin in mountain pose with feet together and hands at side. Step your feet 4-5 feet apart. Turn your right foot about 45 degrees to the left. Turn your left foot 90 degrees to the left so that it is pointing straight out to the side. Slowly bend the left knee until the thigh is parallel with the floor, but keep the knee either behind or directly over your ankle. Raise your arms over head. Then slowly lower them until your left arm is pointing straight ahead and your right arm is pointing back. Concentrate on a spot in front of you and breathe. Take 4 or 5 deep breaths, lower your arms, bring your legs together. Reverse the position.
