Faculty

Cynthia FunkCYNTHIA FUNK: Cynthia is the co-owner of The Yoga Sanctuary. She received her Yoga Teacher Training Certificate at Yoga Works in Los Angeles, studying under the tutelage of Maty Ezraty, Chuck Miller, Eddie Modestini and Erich Schiffmann. Cynthia began teaching in the greater Toronto area in 1997, teaching in public schools, hospitals, private and public gyms, as well as leading retreats on Ward's Island and in Northern Ontario.

In 2000, Cynthia studied in New York City and Boulder, Colorado with Ashtanga guru, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. That same year she completed an Ashtanga Teacher Training with David Swenson. As well, Cynthia studied extensively with Toronto teacher Esther Myers. She has been blessed to have studied with many of the other senior Ashtanga Yoga teachers in North America. For the past 7 years Cynthia has taught The Yoga Sanctuary, Yoga Teacher Training 250 hour courses.

Karen CoveKAREN COVE: "Over and over again, I witness how yoga enhances our own natural healing abilities. By practicing, we learn to listen, we become more aware, and we learn how to respond. We begin to breathe easier, become comfortable in our skin, live more peacefully, and deepen our connection to the cosmos."

Karen combines an advanced understanding of anatomy and sequencing with a deep compassion for her students. Her classes are designed with precision and attention to detail, but her immense love of yoga creates an environment that is fun and welcoming.

Karen completed her first yoga teacher training at the Yoga Sanctuary and has gone on to complete more teacher training with teachers such as Hart Lazer. She has been assisting Yoga Sanctuary co-director Cynthia Funk with the College Studio's teacher training for five years. She is part of the faculty for the Evolving Spirit 250 Hour Teacher Training at the Danforth and Oakville Campuses as well as the 300 Hour Advanced Teacher Training.

Anne-Marie HoodANNE-MARIE HOOD: As a teacher, I offer those who come to class a place to practice yoga as an "art" where art means connecting to ourselves creatively, shifting our experience by playing with the elasticity of our minds and allowing the mind to have an effect on what we experience in the body. Mind first. Intention first.

In my own practice, I use yoga to support my life as a musician. Not one to whom discipline comes easily, through yoga i've learned to value of just showing up. Many people have helped my journey, through training's in Pilates, Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, and the wonderful folks here at The Yoga Sanctuary. In addition to classes here, I also teach yoga for the visually impaired through an organization called Balance, a senior's class at Women's Health in Women's Hands, and maintain a private energy healing practice.

Cathy KeenanCATHY KEENAN: Cathy has been practicing yoga for 10 years and is grateful for the unconditional support it has given her throughout the many changes in her life. After completing her yoga teacher training in 2003, Cathy continued to seek out the teachings of many internationally well respected practioners. It wasn't until studying with Paul Grilley that she took a serious interest in learning more about acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

In pursuit of a deeper understanding of the mind/body connection and an interest in complimentary therapies Cathy completed her diploma in acupuncture and is currently working towards her doctoral in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Teaching yin yoga allows her to blend the two things she loves (yoga and TCM) and share it with others.

CHANEL LUCK ~ Special Guest Teacher: Chanel is honoured to be here to celebrate life through movement and yoga. She travels nationally and internationally to teach and assist both teacher trainings and retreats.

She is the co-founder and director of YogaThree, a company devoted to community, wellness and travel. She currently travels to assist her teacher Shiva Rea and is a Prana Flow Teacher Training Mentor. She is grateful to Ana Forrest, Ellen Heed, Baron Baptiste, Gregor Singleton, Heather Tiddens, Barbara Benagh, Chuck Miller, Hugh Milne and ßGeorgia Milne and all her teachers along this bright path.

She is one of the co-founders of Global Mala Project Boston for the fourth year in a row and is forever grateful to her team of friends and amazing yogi’s who rise up to make each day happen!

Hali SchwartzHALI SCHWARTZ: Hali Schwartz has been practicing Hatha Yoga for 12 years as well as studying yoga philosophy, Sanskrit and yogic chanting since 1988. The course of her studies has focused strongly on the ancient Sanskrit language; the various yoga scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali's Yoga Sutra; as well as chanting from the Vedas, Upanishads, and the verses from the above mentioned yoga texts.

Hali has also had the opportunity to find her way into the study, practice, and teaching of Hatha Yoga through some excellent teacher training instruction in the Sivananda and Bihar schools of Hatha Yoga in Kerala, India where she travelled to in January of 2001, 2002 and and 2003.

Janine WooJANINE WOO: Janine, a graduate of Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (now Ryerson University) in Computer Science, has been practicing Hatha yoga since 1990. Janine discovered Ashtanga yoga in 1996 and it was "love" with her first class! Janine's love for yoga has led her to travel to study with many gifted teachers. She has studied with Eddie Modestini and Nicki Doane, David Williams, Nancy Gilgoff and Lucy Martorella in Hawaii and Sri Pattabhi Jois in Australia and David Swenson in Costa Rica.

Janine brings to her classes a commitment and love of the practice. She knows yoga is the path of greater awareness. She leads class with compassion but challenges her students. Janine also believes practice leads to theory, but without practice, theory is academic.
