CYNTHIA
FUNK: Cynthia is the co-owner of The Yoga Sanctuary.
She received her Yoga Teacher Training Certificate at Yoga Works in
Los Angeles, studying under the tutelage of Maty Ezraty, Chuck Miller,
Eddie Modestini and Erich Schiffmann. Cynthia began teaching in the
greater Toronto area in 1997, teaching in public schools, hospitals,
private and public gyms, as well as leading retreats on Ward's Island
and in Northern Ontario.
In 2000, Cynthia studied in New York City and Boulder, Colorado with
Ashtanga guru, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. That same year she completed an
Ashtanga Teacher Training with David Swenson. As well, Cynthia studied
extensively with Toronto teacher Esther Myers. She has been blessed
to have studied with many of the other senior Ashtanga Yoga teachers
in North America. For the past 7 years Cynthia has taught The Yoga Sanctuary,
Yoga Teacher Training 250 hour courses.
KAREN
COVE: Karen has dedicated her life to both the practice and teaching
of yoga. She combines an advanced understanding of anatomy and sequencing
with a deep compassion for her students. Her classes are designed with
precision and attention to detail, but her immense love of yoga creates
an environment that is fun and welcoming.
Karen completed her first yoga teacher training at the Yoga Sanctuary
and has gone on to completer other teacher trainings with teachers such
as Hart Lazer. She has been assisting Yoga Sanctuary director Cynthia
Funk with the studio's teacher training for four years and is part of
the faculty for the advanced teacher training.
ANNE-MARIE
HOOD: Having been blessed with a "difficult body",
Anne-Marie Hood has spent the last two decades exploring the sources
of restriction in the bodymind and the means to release it. Her journey
has taken her through a degree in Dance from York University, the professional
training programme at the School of the Toronto Dance Theatre and a
very successful career as an interdisciplinary performing artist.
Anne-Marie currently teaches yoga for artists at the Ontario College
of Art and Design, a senior's class at Women's Health in Women's Hands
and yoga for trauma survivors at the Barbara Schlifer Clinic. She is
the founder of Brown Girl's Yoga, a yoga programme for women of colour
and the Ebony Yoga Circle initiative to bring yoga into the Afro-Caribbean
community through peer training. Anne-Marie also maintains a private
intuitive energy healing practice in Toronto.
CATHY
KEENAN: Cathy has been practicing yoga
for 10 years and is grateful for the unconditional support it has given
her throughout the many changes in her life. After completing her yoga
teacher training in 2003, Cathy continued to seek out the teachings
of many internationally well respected practioners. It wasn't until
studying with Paul Grilley that she took a serious interest in learning
more about acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
In pursuit of a deeper understanding of the mind/body connection and
an interest in complimentary therapies Cathy completed her diploma in
acupuncture and is currently working towards her doctoral in Traditional
Chinese Medicine. Teaching yin yoga allows her to blend the two things
she loves (yoga and TCM) and share it with others.
HALI
SCHWARTZ: Hali Schwartz has been practicing Hatha Yoga for 12
years as well as studying yoga philosophy, Sanskrit and yogic chanting
since 1988. The course of her studies has focused strongly on the ancient
Sanskrit language; the various yoga scriptures such as the Bhagavad
Gita and Patanjali's Yoga Sutra; as well as chanting from the Vedas,
Upanishads, and the verses from the above mentioned yoga texts.
Hali has also had the opportunity to find her way into the study, practice,
and teaching of Hatha Yoga through some excellent teacher training instruction
in the Sivananda and Bihar schools of Hatha Yoga in Kerala, India where
she travelled to in January of 2001, 2002 and and 2003.
DEBORAH
WHIPPLE: Deborah will complete the 500 Hour Advanced Teacher
Training at the Yoga Sanctuary in October 2007 and is a long time student
of Iyengar, Ashtanga, and Sivananda Yoga, having begun her love affair
with yoga in North Vancouver 1979.
Deb considers herself fortunate to have studied with many master teachers
of various traditions over the years and believes “it is all good”
as she continues to deepen her education and teaching skills, as well
as develop an ever evolving, rich and rewarding personal practice which
she loves to share with her students. Deb has been teaching Yoga Fundamentals,
Hatha Vinyasa, and Ashtanga Flow to the public since 2003 and has assisted
Cynthia Funk in the Yoga Teacher's Training program.
KARUSIA
WROBLEWSKI: Karusia has been practicing yoga for over thirty
years. She is also a graduate of the York University dance department
and is a specialist in dance prayer.
She has been teaching yoga and movement for fourteen years to people
of all ages and abilities. She has a particular interest in the healing
and transformational aspects of yoga and works with therapeutic yoga
in her private practice. She continues her yoga therapy studies through
the Rocky Mountain School of Yoga and Ayurveda (RMIYA) in Boulder, Colorado,
and is a devoted student of Baba Hari Dass.
CORA
WEN-Special Guest Teacher: Cora Wen has taught Yoga since 1994
and apprenticed over 2 decades with America's senior Krishnamacharya
lineage teachers. Blending Iyengar alignment with mindful attention,
she uncovers a natural and energetic flow to harmonise body, mind and
spirit.
At once infectious and calming, she consistently earns accolades from
peers, mentors and students. Cora is certified at the highest level
with Yoga Alliance ERYT500, CYT with International Association of Yoga
Therapists and is an Advanced Relax & Renew Restorative Yoga trainer.

JANINE
WOO: Janine, a graduate of Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (now
Ryerson University) in Computer Science, has been practicing Hatha yoga
since 1990. Janine discovered Ashtanga yoga in 1996 and it was "love"
with her first class! Janine's love for yoga has led her to travel to
study with many gifted teachers. She has studied with Eddie Modestini
and Nicki Doane, David Williams, Nancy Gilgoff and Lucy Martorella in
Hawaii and Sri Pattabhi Jois in Australia and David Swenson in Costa
Rica.
Janine brings to her classes a commitment and love of the practice.
She knows yoga is the path of greater awareness. She leads class with
compassion but challenges her students. Janine also believes practice
leads to theory, but without practice, theory is academic.
