Running
into Yin
by
Cathy Keenan
It’s the time of year
when it feels so great to throw on a pair
of runners and head out for a nice jog around
the neighbourhood. Or if running is not your
thing maybe dust of the old bike, oil the
chain and start riding around the city. There
isn't a better way to get to know your city
then being active and outdoors.
After months of being indoors
and perhaps a little inactive, it feels so
great to move all that stagnant energy in
the body. There’s nothing like running
through the parks, increasing our cardiac
output, improving our lung function, toning
and strengthening our bodies and feeling both
physically and emotionally stronger. Although
these activities are great, they only take
us through a limited range of motion. The
more active we become, the tighter we can
sometimes feel.
As we move into the summer
months it’s important to not forget
to spend some time stretching as part of your
routine. By maintaining the pliability of
our muscles and connective tissues, even the
most seasoned athletes will contest that stretching
is important in keeping our bodies flexible
and agile.
Stretching helps us recover
faster by increasing blood and nutrient flow
to our tissues, improving our posture and
preventing injury. Yin yoga is an amazing
compliment to an active lifestyle. It provides
deep passive stretches and long holds which
can increase our flexibility and improve our
natural range of motion, helping keep us active
and healthy as we age. Yin yoga also provides
an atmosphere to quiet the mind and allow
the body to rest and recharge. If you’re
an athlete, this time can be well spent by
cultivating a clear and focused mind, which
will help in developing your competitive strategy.
The Yoga Sanctuary Danforth
studio location offers Yin Yoga on Wednesday
nights 7:10 and Yin/Yang yoga on Mondays nights
7:10pm and Saturday afternoons at 3:15.pm
She is also co-teaching a Yin
Yoga Teacher Training course
with Cynthia Funk in March 2011.
Hope
to see you there. Happy stretching!

When
you talk about what you want and why you
want it, there's usually less resistance
within you than when you talk about what
you want and how you're going to get it.
When you pose questions you don't have answers
for, like how, where, when, who, it sets
up a contradictory vibration that slows
everything down.
