Back
To School
Did
we ever leave school? Aren't we learning informally
everyday? Learning about our habits, learning
about new things? One thing that can teach
us a lot about ourselves is our breath. When
we are experiencing different things our breath
changes. When we have control over our breath,
sometimes we can begin to offset the depths
of emotions by controlling our breath.
One
style of breathing common to many paths of
yoga is Ujjayi (oujayee) breathing. Ujjayi
breath is performed by creating a soft hollow
sound in the back of the throat while inhaling
and exhaling through the nose. The soft hollow
sound sounds much like waves on the ocean
and is really only audible to you, it does
not have to sound like Darth Vader! Ujjayi
helps you to focus your mind on the sound
of your breath and has a calming effect on
your body. Notice how your rib cage expands
and contracts as you breath and activate balance
within your days, just by taking a few focused
breaths!
Breathing
through the nose is a cleaner way of breathing
as their are nose hairs in your nose that
capture pollutants on their way in and push
them back out as you breathe out of your nose.
Your throat has no hairs like this and pollutants
go down to your lungs. Take some time each
day to notice your breath and take some Ujjayi
breaths along the way!

Mantra
for October
The
Gayatri Mantra
Om
Bhoor Bhuvah Swaha
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat

Gayatri,
the five-faced Goddess, is said to have
domain over the five senses or pranas, and
protects these five life-forces of those
who chant the Gayatri Mantra. In her role
as the protector, Gayatri is referred to
as Savitri. Its meaning is that "May
the Almighty God(dess) illuminate our intellect
to lead us along the righteous path".
The mantra is also a prayer to the "giver
of light and life" - the sun (savitur) |
