| YOGA
for SCOLIOSIS with SENEM SEN
Saturday April 25, 6:30 to 9:30pm
@ Danforth Studio $55 + gst
Scoliosis refers to an abnormal curvature of the
spine. The spine bends to one side or the other,
causing compression of one side of the body. The
ribs on one side will be closer together while the
ribs of the other side will be farther apart. Scoliosis
also involves a rotation of the spine, in which
the individual vertebrae bones twist around the
long axis of the spine. All these conditions make
it painful to even stand or sit for long periods
of time. The spine needs decompression and movement
on both sides of the body along with twists, to
even things out.
By
combining the yoga postures with breathing awareness,
one can develop an inner alignment, creating a feeling
of inner symmetry as well. This often comes as a
relief to the person with scoliosis, who feels "asymmetrical"
most of the time. The symmetry is accomplished by
stretching muscles that have tightened and strengthening
muscles that have become weak from the asymmetrical
imbalance that is created over the years.
Through
yoga, one can find that balance point that allows
the scoliosis curve to coexist with gravity. The
result for most people with scoliosis is better
posture and less pain.
Whether
you have scoliosis yourself or know someone with
scoliosis, it is empowering to be informed on the
kinds of scoliosis that exist. In this workshop,
we will talk about the types of scoliosis, how to
work on your own curvature and tailor it to your
yoga practice. We will go through a yoga sequence
with modifications available for people with scoliosis
as well.
If
you are a teacher, you may find this workshop informative
in helping your students with scoliosis.

DO
YOUR OHM WORK
Banish Those Body Issues by Hallie Levine
Sklar
When
you're down on your body, it's tempting to spend
the majority of your gym time doing calorie–blasting
cardio. But a new study indicates that trading
in some of that treadmill time of a yoga class
may have more far reaching results.
Researchers
at the University of California, Berkeley, found
that women who regularly practiced yoga had a
greater sense of satisfaction with their bodies
than those who participated only in aerobics classes.
In fact, the more yoga women did, the better they
felt about their bodies, while the more hours
women spent in cross-trainers, the more likely
they were to have disordered eating behaviors.
"With
yoga, you learn to tune into your body as you go
through the poses," explains Jeffrey Morrison,
M.D., director of the Morrison Center, and integrative
medicine center in New York City." And that
will help you appreciate its abilities rather than
simply its appearance."
