In the summer of 2005, I went to Tamil Nadu, India to volunteer in a vocational training school for underprivileged young men and women. I taught English lessons. It was a wonderful experience in a centre that included a school for disabled children and an orphanage in addition to the vocational school.

One of the board members of this organization was a teacher from a town a few hours away called KodaiKanal. Being a teacher myself, I easily connected with her. Although Joice and her husband Selva were much older than me, I found myself easily engaged with conversation and ended up spending a few days with them. During that time, they introduced me to the women that they wanted to help.

Woman carrying firewoodThese women carry fire logs all day long. Most of them are single mothers forced to do this work to support their children. Although they work long and hard, they barely make enough rupees (money) to sustain themselves and their children.

Their children are left at home without food, toys or supervision. Joice and Selva wanted to open a daycare to help the children and the women in this situation. As a teacher and a person, I thought the project was a highly worthwhile investment. Joice teaches math at an International school and Selva is a college professor. They are working on this project as concerned citizens only. They will not make a penny (or rupee) off of it.

The unfair and inhumane situation of the women and their children, as well as the amazing spirit of Joice and Selva are my motivation to do the yoga fundraiser. My goal is to raise $500. This amount will support the cost of 5 children attending the daycare for one year. This includes a cup of milk and a lunch everyday, as well as supervision and early childhood education. The daycare is for 2 and 1/2 to 4 and 1/2 year olds.

Thanks so much for your support. It will be a big deal to those five kids
