About Jeremy Taylor

Jeremy TaylorJeremy began the practice of yoga, in 1964, with Swami Vishnudevananda and took The Sivananda Teachers Training course at Swami Vishnu’s Val Morin ashram, in the Laurentians, and taught Hatha Yoga at the Sivananda Yoga Centre in Montreal and later at the Denver YMCA.

In 1971, he was initiated into meditation by Guru Maharaji and lived in the Denver ashram, of the Divine Light Mission, from 1974 to 1976. He was in training to be an initiator.

Over the intervening years, he has experienced many "consciousness raising" disciplines, but has found that Yoga, combined with continuing study of A Course in Miracles, provides a wonderful balance for health and spiritual growth.

Jeremy played drums in jazz groups, from the mid 1950’s, before discovering his great passion, photography, in 1959. A book of his recent work: Toronto: Intersection and the Poetics of Urban Space, was published in 2000. His work is part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada.

"Jazz taught me spontaneity. Photography taught me how to see. Yoga continues to teach me what I really am.

Teaching yoga is about the circular rhythm of giving and receiving energy. More than a couple of thousand years ago, Patanjali codified the practice, but it remains a continuing journey of discovery for each one of us. We appreciate our own uniqueness as we develop our talents, while at the same time realizing how much we share at the deepest level. It is this fine balance of uniqueness and sharing which makes the world a beautiful place.

By offering one vivid demonstration, one clear instruction, one heartfelt exchange I hope to awaken my students to the wonder of what they really are.

I wish to thank my teachers, specifically: Cynthia Funk and Karusia Wroblewski, for the happy balance of guidance, rigour and fun we receive by rolling out our mats, time and again, to give it our best shot at The Yoga Sanctuary."

~ Jeremy Taylor, at 70, April 2008.
